Audience Categories/Target Audience

A
You would expect people with jobs like this to not have much free time on their hands, so they won’t have time for music. If they were to listen to music it would be the mainstream that you hear on the radio; R&B, Hip-hop, pop, rap. This is because it is constantly being played.
B
People with these sort of jobs are more social, so the chances of music they are interested in are bound to be a mixture between mainstream, ; R&B, Hip-hop, pop, rap and rock.
C1
You would expect the people with these jobs to listen to Pop, Hip-hop or R&B. This is because these people are usually busy with their job and aren’t so concerned with the music that they listen to.
C2
R&B, Hip-hop, pop, rap and rock. Mainstream music because their profession makes don’t give them so much free time.
D
This would be between R&B, Hip-hop, pop, rap because that is the more popular music in this century and it is the most played.
E
These people are young, so they are probably with the more popular genre of music, R&B, Hip-hop, pop, rap. They have more time on their hands so they are likely to have a wider variety of music.

The target audience I will be aiming at will be in group E. This is because it is the younger generation and things seem to become more popular amongst the younger generation. The micro elements used in my music video such as Iphones, xbox 360 and the clothes worn, are all part of the iconography that I will be using. The younger generation will notice these things and give them a sense of familiarisation which can help them understand what is going on in the video.

The editing and cinematography I use throughout my music video will all fit in with the narrative, this will help engage the audience in a more simple way. Using these techniques will lead me to a more successful music video and will help me understand how to make other successful music videos. My music video will appeal to my target audience as my audience will be familiar with the locations used.

Questionnaire Evaluation

The purpose of this questionnaire was to see what age group I should aim my music video at, and from the results I gained, I should be aiming my video at 16-21 year olds. This is because it gives me a wider range of ages to be aiming my video at, which from my results a high percentage of them were between these ages. My questionnaire also gives me an outline of what genre music would be better for me to make a more successful music video.

This has helped me to plan my music video by giving me a better idea of the music genre I should be picking for a more successful video. From my results, the more popular genre of music was Pop, followed by Hip-hop and R&B. I also asked what genre of music do they enjoy the music videos to. The results ended up being R&B videos being liked more than the other genres, followed by Dance. This is helpful as it shows me what genre music videos I will have to look into to be able to make a music video that is popular amongst its audience.

I gave my questionnaire out to 20 people to fill in and give back to me; they were 20 random people, so there was no equal amount of males and females. 20 people seemed like a good number to hand my questionnaire out to because picking 20 people out of random, who were willing to fill out a questionnaire would not take long, so it was very time efficient.

From my questionnaire I found out that the R&B and Pop genre were altogether the most popular genre’s listened to and the music videos watched, this is useful to me because I can plan my music video to be like the R&B and Pop genre. I will be using the results from my questionnaire to help plan my music video as is has given me a basic outline to what will help my video be more successful.

Music Channels

The target audience MTV aim at are the younger generation. This ranges between the ages of 14 to 35. MTV play the mainstream music that is popular in the charts, this is so that their channel attracts all audience, and gets lots of views.

MTV has a variety of music that is played within its channel. These genres include, Pop, RnB, Dance and Rap. They play a variety of music so that they attract audiences of different genres, this leads to their channel getting more views and more popular. The more views a channel gets the more money the channel gets.

One of the artists that appear on MTV on a regular basis would be Justin Bieber. Justin Bieber is popular amongst the female audience of MTV, and is based around the Pop, RnB genre type music. Because Justin Bieber is popular amongst a certain audience it is important for MTV to keep him as a regular on their channel, this is because a music channel wants all audiences. Another artist that appears on MTV would be LMFAO. LMFAO are a Pop/Dance group that release songs that find their way into the charts. LMFAO are popular amongst all audiences, this is because their music is upbeat and catchy, and they also attract dancers to listen to MTV. JLS are another group played on MTV quite regular. JLS are popular amongst the female audience and attract them to listen to MTV. JLS are a young Hip Hop/Pop group, which appeals more to the younger audience.

Branding is essential for a music channel; this is because people will be familiar with the logo. Branding are things such as magazines, websites etc. Audience who are familiar with, and like MTV will buy these things. This leads to the music channel making more money as they are selling.

The MTV logo is recognised by most people. The logo is popular as it is advertised almost everywhere. The logo is simple; it has the letters ‘MTV’ on it. MTV stands for ‘Music Television’. The logo for MTV changes depending on what festival is coming up, and by changes I mean the colour of how the logo is laid out. The colours of the MTV logo are quite dull, but this could be because they are known as a professional music channel. The "TV" on the MTV logo is in graffiti writing, this brings out the urban side to the logo and lets the audience know that there is some sort of urban music within the channel.

Kerrang don’t aim at a specific age group, the music that they play ranges from music released years ago, to the new music that is released. Kerrang mostly plays rock on their channel.

Kerrang are a rock genre music channel. This limits the amount of audience as they only play one type of music on their channel. But the people who listen to rock know about Kerrang, this is because it is the most viewed rock music channel, although Kerrang don’t have a wide range of viewers, they still have a majority of the people who listen to rock.

One of the artists that appear on Kerrang is Paramore. Paramore are a known rock band, even by people who do not listen to rock that much, but because of their popularity people who don’t usually listen to rock will hear their songs a few times on the radio. People who have heard their songs on the radio before could then go to Kerrang because of their new liking. Another one of the artists that appear on Kerrang on a regular basis are the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers have been around for quite a long time and are popular on Kerrang. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers appeal to a wide range of age groups; this is because they have been around for quite a long time, so the older audience who have listened to them from the beginning will still listen to them. Their music is quite popular, so the younger audience are bound to like them too.
Kerrang are popular for their weekly magazines. Their magazines have information about what events are coming out, information on the bands that play on Kerrang and new up and coming bands that have started to get popularity amongst the Kerrang fans. This channel is used as a form of branding as the music played on this channel is rock. People who listen to this channel know that they are listening to rock.

The logo appeals to their audience as by looking at it, you can tell that they play rock music, or music similar to that. The Kerrang logo is popular as it is advertised. People who do not listen to Kerrang would know by looking at the logo that it is a music station. Kerrang's logo has cracks in it which shows that the channel has some rock to it.

Box Television is aimed at the younger generation, ranging between the ages of 14-35. The music played on Box is the new songs released in the charts, mainstream. Music liked by most people.

The music played on Box is the popular songs that come out. These genres include, Pop, RnB, Dance and rap. These music genres attract a wide audience as they are mixed. The variety of music played on the channel gets more views as people will tune in because they know a song will be played on that channel.

The artists played on this channel depend on what songs become popular. One of the artists played on the channel frequently would be Rihanna. Rihanna is popular mostly amongst the younger generation. The songs she releases are known by a wide audience and attract lots of people to listen to them. As Rihanna releases popular songs, she is played on Box quite frequently. David Guetta is another artist played on Box on a regular basis. David Guetta is a DJ and is in the Dance/Pop genre of music. His music has become quite main stream and is listened to by everyone. Most people know who David Guetta is and would know what channels to go to so that they can listen to him. Nicki Minaj is another artist played on Box. Nicki Minaj is in the Hip-Hop/Rap genre music. Nicki Minaj releases popular songs that are why she is seen on Box quite a lot.

This channel is used as a form as branding because the music played on it is mainstream and popular; people who listen to this channel know that they are listening to new releases and music that is popular amongst the public.

The Box logo is popular amongst its audience as it is different from most other logos. The logo is creative as the letters of ‘Box’ are inside boxes. The logo is popular as it is advertised. The Box logo is not so colourful but is quite funky because of the design of it, this lets the audience know that the channel has pop included.

Kiss is another channel aimed at the younger generation, aging from 14 to 35. Kiss consists of the Hip-Hop, Dance and RnB genre music. The music played on this channel is popular and are in the charts, or have been in the charts in the past.

The music on this channel consists of RnB, Hip-Hop and Dance. This type of music is popular amongst the younger generation. Dance/Pop Genre

LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem ft. Lauren Bennett, GoonRock

Mid shots are used in this music video to show the facial expression of the person plus the clothes that they are wearing, this advertises the dress sense they have. In the mid shots there are usually more than one person in them, this is because it is a dance song and their is a specific dance routine that they are all doing

Long shots are another shot used frequently in this music video; this is because it shows the audience what they are wearing, and the dance that they are doing. In this video they are all dressed unusually this is to make the music video stand out from others, it also gets them noticed as they will be recognised for that type of clothing. The long shots are used to show the dance routing they are doing.

There is a tracking shot of when Redfoo is shuffling down the road, this is to show that the shuffle includes moving, the tracking is to show the surroundings of where they are. As he is moving down the road you see everyone else around him shuffling as well. This shows the audience that this is the dance that everyone should do.

The Mise-en-scene in this video consists of abandoned cars in the street; everyone dressed retro/raving clothes. The setting of the video is in the street because everyone went crazy over the shuffling dance. The body language of everyone in the video is energetic, this is because they are all dancing and having a good time. This relates to the dance genre because everyone is doing the same dance routine to an upbeat song and is having a good time.

This task was quite easy as I am familiar with the dance genre and like to watch the videos for entertainment. Dance genre music videos are fun to watch as they include dancing which leads to you trying the dance if you like it.

Mise On Scene Of a Music Video

Game - Pot of Gold ft Chris Brown

The setting in this music video is of where Game lives. This relates to the song as Chris Brown says “All the spotlight is not for me” he is saying that even though he has money, it is not going to change who he is, or where he comes from. At the beginning of the music video there are pictures of him when he was younger, this also relates to the song as Chris Brown says “I miss the days when life was simple”. This shows the audience that Game isn’t going to change his lifestyle just because he has money.

Throughout the video everyone is wearing normal clothes; there isn’t anyone who is in a costume to represent anything. This shows the audience that he is real and isn’t going to change who he is just because he has fame to his name, he is going to stay true to who he is.

The lighting when Game starts rapping at the beginning is quite low-key, this would be because he is talking about how his life has been, and that things didn’t go very well for him. This shows the audience that these were the times of his life when it hasn’t been so easy. The lighting in the music video goes to light key as he goes outside with his son. Outside there are his friends in his front garden, people he has known since he was younger. This shows the audience that he is more interested in being himself rather than letting money change him.

This music video is conventional to the rap genre because he is rapping about his life, which is where the music video is based, around the area he was brought up and has lived throughout his life. The music video also contains people he has known sinse he was young which is conventional to the music video as he talks about he is not going to change, so he will not cut people out of his life just because he is famous.

Music Video Editing

Tinie Tempah – Till I’m gone ft. Wiz Khalifa

At the beginning of this video there is a straight cut from a women getting out of Tinie Tempah’s car to a shot from inside of the car of her outside of the car. This would give the audience an idea of what Tinie is seeing from inside his car. The look he gives the woman shows that he wants her to go, she then shakes her head and walks off, this relates to the song as he says he will be back one day.

The 180 degree rule is used when the women is outside of the car and leaning on the window looking in at Tinie. The 180 degree rule is used so that it does not look like the car is going the opposite way of where the car first was. It is to stop the audience from getting confused about what way the car is going and if it changed direction or not.

Fade cut is used when Tinie is driving his car, when he says the locations that he has been to they appear on his window as if he is driving along them, as he says another country the picture on the window fades from one location to the other. This gives the audience an idea that over time he has been to a few different countries, this also relates to the song as he says he will be back one day. It shows he does not know where he is going.

Jump cut is used in this video from when Tinie is driving his car to when he is walking up on a hill. This moves the camera from when Tinie is singing inside of his car to the narrative of the music video when he goes and meets up with his friends. This shows the audience that the music video is narrative based.

A cross cut is used just passed the middle stage of the music video from when Tinie stops singing and Wiz comes in. The shot goes from Tinie walking outside and the lighting is quite high key to then a low key shot of him in his car driving around Paris. This relates to the narrative of the song as he is going through different countries and is not at home.

The audience would be interested in watching this music video as it is different from other music videos, showing that Tinie needs space so that he goes travelling and will be back for his girlfriend one day.

Camera Shots

Beautiful People – Chris Brown feat Benny Benassi

At around the beginning part of the music video there is a tracking shot of Chris Brown and some others on their scooter. This is used as they are on their way to their concert, to party with their fans. This shows us that they do not see themselves as any different from their fans just because they are famous. The song is called ‘Beautiful people’ because he appreciates his fans for the support and thinks that they are beautiful.

There is an establishing shot of the crowd when they are at the concert as they are jumping up and down. This shows the audience that the people there are having a good time, listening to good music and in the presence a famous person who they are a fan of. This also shows the audience that they are liked people.

There is a close up as Chris Brown hugs one of his fans. This shows the audience that he shows affection to his fans, and that he appreciates them, whether they are famous or not, and that fame has not got too his head. So he has time for his fans instead of ignoring them and doing his own thing.

There is a mid-shot of Chris Brown as he is dancing by the DJ deck. This shows the audience what he is wearing, promoting the sort of dress sense he has. It also shows that he is enjoying himself because his fans are enjoying themselves, you can tell this by his body movements.

At the end of the music video Chris Brown is standing against a blue wall with the words ‘Beautiful people’ on the wall. This is to show the audience that he thinks that they are beautiful for supporting him.

The audience would be interested in watching this music video because the song itself is good. The music video is entertaining as the people in the video have lots of energy and are dancing everywhere, it also shows them communicating with their fans.

What is a music video?

The genre of this music video is RnB, Rap. The beat to the song is face paced which features Drake rapping about how much money he has and what he likes doing with it.

He says he is floating in and out of consciousness and the video keeps cutting to black quick. This allows the audience to understand what is going through his head.

There are close ups of Drakes face when he is in the elevator as he is singing. It shows what he is wearing and that he is smoking a cigar. When someone smokes a cigar it suggests that they have quite a bit of money.

His clothes change frequently during the video. This attracts audience as it engages them more. Also, the changing of clothes relates to the narrative of him having money to spend.

This music video is more narrative than anything else. The narrative is about him getting money and what it has done to him, getting confidence, getting really drunk without caring about the consequences. In the video is shows him and some friends all around an expensive looking table toasting to his success.

There is a relationship between the music lyrics and the visuals as he sayd "Money over everything, money on my mind" he is in an elevator dressed smartly in some expensive looking clothes and smoking a cigar looking over the city as if he owns it.

This music video is narrative based as he is talking about how he did not have money at one point but now he does. "I know I exaggerated things, now I got it like that" The images you see throughout the music video shows that he has money, when people smoke cigars they usually are quite well off.
